Adults are active by day and short-lived, with females surviving only around a month, during which their single task is to lay eggs on coffee bark.
It is one of a small group of wood-boring beetles that plague coffee. It should not be confused with the tiny coffee berry borer, which attacks the cherry and seed rather than the trunk, nor with the black twig borer, which tunnels into thin branches. Why arabica and mostly not robusta

The difference is physical and chemical: robusta tends to have a thicker, harder, more fibrous stem and a bark chemistry that neonate larvae struggle to establish in, so eggs laid on robusta far less often develop into damaging tunnels.
This single fact shapes planting decisions across affected regions. Where borer pressure is high, often on warmer, lower-elevation land, growers frequently favour robusta or robusta hybrids precisely because they tolerate the pest, reserving prized arabica for cooler, higher, or better-shaded blocks where infestation risk is lower. The trade-off is real, because arabica commands the specialty market while robusta is more of a workhorse, so the borer quietly influences which coffee a hillside can grow at all.
Life cycle and seasonal flights
The white stem borer runs on a seasonal clock. Adults emerge from infested wood in two flights a year, timed around the monsoon in its Asian range: a pre-monsoon flight roughly in April and May, and a post-monsoon flight in October to December, with peak emergence often in late spring and again in mid-to-late autumn. These are the danger windows, because a beetle's whole life above bark is measured in weeks.
During a flight, mated females seek out sunlit stems and lay eggs, singly or in small batches, deep in the crevices and roughness of the bark on the main stem and thick primary branches. The newly hatched larva first feeds just beneath the bark, then bores inward and downward, cutting a long gallery through the living wood and packing it behind itself with pale, powdery frass. The larva passes through several instars. In the field on arabica, the whole egg-to-adult cycle takes roughly 140 to 180 days, so the generations line up neatly with those two annual flights.
Signs and symptoms to look for
Because the destructive stage is hidden inside the wood, growers learn to read the outside of the stem. The earliest reliable tell is a set of raised ridges or wavy lines on the bark, where a larva is tunnelling just underneath and the surface bulges over its path. By the time a tree wilts, the internal damage is usually severe.
- Borer ridges: raised, irregular lines or scars running along the main stem, the surface signature of larvae feeding just below the bark.

Enough tunnels effectively ring-bark, or girdle, the trunk from the inside, choking off the flow between roots and canopy. The white stem borer is an Asian pest. Its range covers arabica-growing areas of India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and parts of Southeast Asia and southern China, with records across Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Historically it was worst on lower, warmer, sun-exposed plantations, but observers note it climbing to higher elevations, well above 1,000 metres in some areas, a shift often linked to warming temperatures that widen the beetle's comfortable range. It is not established as a serious pest in the arabica belts of Latin America or Africa, which is one reason the world's largest arabica origins have so far been spared this particular beetle.
Managing the white stem borer
There is no single silver bullet; control is an integrated calendar of habits built around the beetle's biology, especially its love of sunlit bark. The core tactics fall into a few groups.
Shade and canopy management
Because females avoid dim, shaded stems and strongly prefer bright, exposed ones for egg-laying, a well-kept overhead canopy is one of the most powerful tools available. Maintaining adequate shade-grown conditions keeps direct sun off the main stems during the flight periods and makes the plantation far less attractive for oviposition. Sensible pruning that avoids baring the trunk, and good canopy planning as part of how coffee is grown, both feed into the same goal: fewer sunlit stems, fewer eggs.
Tracing, uprooting, and burning
The single most important sanitation step is to trace infested trees, reading those ridges, exit holes, and wilting bushes, then uproot and destroy them, ideally by burning, before the next flight. An infested stem left in the ground is a nursery that will release a fresh batch of beetles onto its neighbours, so removing the reservoir ahead of emergence breaks the cycle.
Physical stem treatments
- Bark scrubbing: scrubbing or brushing the main stem and thick primaries once or twice a year smooths the bark and destroys eggs and freshly hatched larvae before they tunnel deep.
- Lime-washing: coating stems with a lime wash fills crevices and leaves a smooth, unattractive surface that discourages egg-laying.
- Stem wrapping: wrapping the trunk and primaries with strips of gunny sacking, nylon mesh, or similar material during flight periods physically blocks females from reaching the bark to lay.
Trapping and choosing tolerant plants
Pheromone-baited cross-vane traps, timed to the flight windows and spaced through the block, can mass-trap emerging adults and also warn a grower that a flight has begun. Light trapping is sometimes used similarly. Finally, the oldest strategy of all is varietal: where borer pressure is relentless, planting resistant robusta or tolerant hybrids sidesteps the problem, and biological allies (parasitoid wasps, the fungus Beauveria bassiana, and stem-drilling woodpeckers) chip away at populations in the background.
