Stenophylla coffee is coffee made from Coffea stenophylla, a West African species that was grown and traded on its own merits in the nineteenth century, written off within a few decades of robusta's rise, and then found again growing wild in Sierra Leone in 2018 after a long gap with no confirmed sighting. It carries a combination almost nothing else in the genus does: a cup that trained tasters read in arabica terms, on a plant that crops in heat arabica cannot take.
Before anything else, a correction that governs everything below. Coffea stenophylla is not a kind of arabica. It is not a variety, a cultivar or a selection — those words describe plants within a species, the way Bourbon, Typica and Geisha are all arabicas. Stenophylla is its own species: a separate branch of the coffee genus with its own leaves, its own fruit, its own seed and its own agronomy. Every expectation you carry over from variety talk has to be reset at the door.
What stenophylla coffee actually is
The species was formally described by the Scottish botanist George Don in 1834. The name is Greek — stenos (narrow) and phyllon (leaf) — for the slim, glossy, lance-shaped foliage that identifies it on sight. Its historical common names include "highland coffee" and "highland coffee of Sierra Leone", which is why older texts file it as a highland species and why it is still sometimes indexed simply as the Sierra Leone coffee species. Both names deserve a caution: the plant is not a high-altitude crop in the sense that word carries for arabica.
Its native ground is the Upper Guinean forest belt of West Africa — Sierra Leone, Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire, with records from Liberia as well. In the wild it grows as a shrub or small tree, commonly described at roughly three to six metres, at elevations generally reported from about 150 metres up to the low hundreds. That is lowland to mid-slope forest, not mountain. The wild plants relocated in Sierra Leone were likewise in forest at modest elevation rather than on high ground.
The fruit is the immediate tell. Where arabica and robusta ripen to red — or to yellow, in some selections — stenophylla ripens to a deep purple-black. The seeds inside are small, noticeably smaller than a commercial arabica bean, which turns out to be a large part of why the species lost its place in the trade. The leaves are narrow enough that the plant reads as an odd, willowy coffee shrub rather than the broad-leaved silhouette most drinkers picture.
One honest caveat frames the rest of this page: the documented record on this species is thin. Most twentieth-century writing about it recycles a handful of nineteenth-century sources rather than adding fresh observation, and the modern evidence base rests on a small number of recent studies. Where figures appear below, they are reported figures with hedges attached, not settled facts about a crop.
Where it sits on the Coffea family tree
The genus Coffea holds well over a hundred described species, and only a handful have ever been farmed at scale; the botanical background belongs to our guide to the coffea plant. Two species carry almost the whole world crop: arabica, and the hardy, high-yielding lowland species behind robusta coffee. A distant third is liberica, big-beaned and strongly flavoured, grown in pockets rather than at volume.
Stenophylla is not a close relative of arabica, and this is the single most useful correction to the popular framing. Arabica is an allotetraploid — a natural hybrid of two other species, doubled up in its chromosomes. Stenophylla is a diploid African species sitting on a different branch of the same genus. It is treated in the research literature as a crop wild relative of interest for breeding: related to the farmed species, useful as a source of traits, but not one of arabica's parent species. Whatever produces its arabica-like character, it is not inherited arabica ancestry. The resemblance appears to be convergence, which is a far more interesting fact than "wild arabica" and considerably harder to write a headline about.
It also has a shadow. Coffea affinis, a closely allied and equally forgotten West African species, was likewise cultivated on a small scale, likewise lost to the trade, and likewise relocated during the same recent field work in Sierra Leone. The published literature is blunt that knowledge of both species has barely advanced in decades.

Why the species was abandoned
This is not a story of a coffee nobody liked. Stenophylla was cultivated in Upper West Africa from at least the mid-nineteenth century and exported, in small volumes, from Sierra Leone and neighbouring territories. Seed obtained from Sierra Leone reached Kew in the 1890s and was distributed onward to botanic gardens and trial plantings across the tropics. Plants fruiting in Trinidad at the end of that decade produced a coffee that contemporary reports rated as the equal of the finest arabica. The nineteenth-century verdict on the cup was, if anything, more enthusiastic than the modern one.
What killed it was arithmetic. The trees yielded poorly and the beans were small, so a grower gave up weight twice over — fewer cherries, and less green coffee from each one. That was survivable while stenophylla had a role as a West African substitute for a scarce, rust-battered arabica trade. It stopped being survivable in the early twentieth century, when robusta arrived in the region with yields and disease tolerance that nothing else in West Africa could approach. Colonial agriculture switched, and it switched fast. Commercial cultivation had effectively stopped by somewhere between the 1920s and the mid-twentieth century, with small-scale local growing reported to have lingered in places for decades after that.
Then the wild populations went quiet too. The species was not recorded in the wild in Sierra Leone after the mid-1950s, and the last confirmed wild sighting anywhere is generally placed in Côte d'Ivoire in the 1980s. Deforestation across the Upper Guinean belt did the rest. The IUCN Red List assesses Coffea stenophylla as Vulnerable — worth holding onto, because a species can be simultaneously a promising crop candidate and a conservation concern, and this one is both.
How it was found again
Field survey work in Sierra Leone in 2018 established the first part of the answer: there was essentially no commercial stenophylla cultivation left to find. The second part came in the forest. Researchers located a single wild plant late that year, and a larger wild population shortly afterwards — the first confirmed living wild material in the country in more than sixty years. Further wild stands and cultivated remnants have been documented in the region since, and genetic work on Sierra Leonean populations has begun to map how much diversity actually survives.
Rediscovery is the part of the story that travels. It is also the least consequential part. Finding a plant tells you the species exists; it tells you nothing about whether it can be farmed, processed, shipped or sold. Everything interesting since has been the slow business of answering those questions.
What stenophylla coffee actually tastes like
Here the record is genuinely good, and also genuinely narrow — read it as a strong signal from a small experiment rather than as an established fact about a crop.
In 2020, a blind sensory evaluation was run in France under the agricultural research organisation CIRAD, setting stenophylla against arabica samples of high and medium quality and a robusta. Judges were asked, sample by sample, whether what they were drinking was arabica. A large majority — reported at 81 percent — said yes for the stenophylla, against near-unanimity for the high-quality arabica and a very low figure for the robusta. Reported at 47 percent, close to half the panel also flagged it as something new that they could not place in either species, which is arguably the more interesting result of the two.
Descriptively, the panel reported natural sweetness, medium-high acidity, fruit character and good body, with a fragrance likened to a washed African arabica. Under Specialty Coffee Association scoring protocols the sample came in just above the 80-point line that marks the specialty threshold.
Now the caveats, which the researchers themselves put front and centre. The sample came from wild plants rather than from a selected, well-managed, ripe-picked harvest, and it was processed crudely by any modern standard. The panel was small. One sample, one occasion. The honest reading is that a roughly handled wild coffee cleared the specialty line and read as arabica to most of a trained panel — which is remarkable, and which is not the same as knowing what a properly farmed stenophylla lot would score. Later chemical work has begun looking at which compounds underlie the resemblance, reporting similarities to arabica in several flavour-relevant compounds alongside clear differences in others, but the sensory picture still rests on very few cups.
The combination that is not supposed to exist
This is the whole reason anyone is paying attention, and it is worth stating precisely, because the interesting claim is narrower than the headlines.
Coffee's governing trade-off is that flavour and heat tolerance sit at opposite ends. Delicacy, acidity and aromatic complexity are associated with arabica, with altitude and with cool mean temperatures; ruggedness in heat is associated with canephora and liberica, and it has historically cost you the cup. That trade-off is why the climate conversation is so uncomfortable — the geography that grows the best-tasting coffee is precisely the geography a warming climate erodes first. Stenophylla is interesting because it appears on both sides of that trade-off at once. The published comparison reports it growing and cropping at mean annual temperatures several degrees Celsius above arabica's — a gap of roughly six to seven degrees is the range that has been reported from the field data — and around two degrees above robusta's, while the sensory panel read the cup in arabica terms. If both halves hold up under cultivation, that is a genuinely unusual pairing, and it is the whole reason a forgotten shrub is now discussed as a climate resilient coffee candidate rather than a botanical footnote.
Two hedges belong here. First, the temperature figure describes the mean annual conditions of the places the species is observed to grow, not a measured heat-tolerance ceiling, and it is a comparison of averages rather than a promise about extremes — how the plant behaves in a severe heat episode, or under drought, is a separate question and a much less documented one. Second, tolerance is not invulnerability. Nothing in the record suggests stenophylla can be planted in punishing conditions without shade, water and sound agronomy; "heat tolerant" is a relative statement about where the species can sit in the landscape, not a licence to ignore how it is farmed.
What would have to happen before you could drink it
The blunt answer is: a great deal, and it has barely started. Stenophylla is not commercially available in any meaningful quantity. Anything you read about its future is a projection.
The revival work is real, though, and it is a useful map of what is missing. A community nursery has been established in eastern Sierra Leone, propagating material taken from a few hundred wild plants for planting out into trial plots, with growers in the region running those plots. The science side has been led by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, working with the University of Greenwich, CIRAD and Sierra Leonean partners, and supported from within the coffee trade. The stated aim is proof of concept — to find out which plants perform, under what management, before anyone talks about volume.
What has to be answered before any of it reaches a cup, in rough order: propagation, meaning enough planting material of known provenance; agronomy, meaning spacing, shade, nutrition and pruning for a plant nobody alive has farmed at scale; yield selection, because low yield and small beans are the exact reasons the species was dropped and nothing has fixed them yet; processing, because there is no established protocol for a purple-black cherry with small seeds; and a supply chain — grading standards, export logistics, buyers willing to take on an unfamiliar species. Then, only then, a market. Tree crops answer these questions on a scale of years per question, not months.
There is also a conservation obligation running in parallel. A Vulnerable species with fragmented wild populations needs its genetic diversity protected regardless of whether it ever becomes a crop, and the crop ambition and the conservation ambition are not automatically aligned.
The bottom line
Stenophylla is the most credible piece of good news in the coffee-and-climate conversation, and it is also nowhere near being a solution. What is solid: it is a distinct West African species, historically farmed and genuinely liked, abandoned for yield rather than flavour, lost to sight for decades, and back in cultivation on a trial scale. What is promising but thin: a small blind panel read it as arabica, from wild material handled roughly. What is unproven: everything that turns a plant into a crop.
Treat the species as a breeding resource and a live experiment rather than as a rescue. Its greatest value may never be a bag of stenophylla on a shelf at all — it may be the traits it can lend to a genus that badly needs somewhere warmer to stand. And it is worth remembering how nearly this option was lost: a species written off on economics a century ago, missing from the wild record for two generations, is now the plant a warming industry is most curious about. That is an argument for looking after the rest of the genus too.
