Historically these were destined for blends and commodity lots rather than showcase single origins.

That is beginning to change, and processing is the reason. Because the raw material is mild, some Turrialba producers are using post-harvest processing to add the character the elevation does not. Instead of the classic washed method, they are experimenting with honey process coffee, where some of the sweet, sticky mucilage is left clinging to the bean during drying to build body and syrupy sweetness, and with fully natural process coffee, where cherries dry whole to pick up fruity, fermented, sometimes boozy notes. Costa Rica is also the home of the "honey" terminology and of micro-mill culture, so the tools for this kind of experimentation are close at hand.
