Coffee root rot is not a single disease but a cluster of soil-borne fungal infections that kill coffee trees from below the ground up. The main offenders are Armillaria root rot (the "honey fungus"), Rosellinia black root rot, and brown root rot, all of which rot the roots and root collar until the whole tree collapses. Because the fungi travel through soil and root-to-root contact, coffee root rot spreads as expanding patches of dying trees rather than scattered single deaths, which is one of its most reliable warning signs.

What coffee root rot actually is

The phrase covers several distinct pathogens that share a habit: they colonise the woody root system and collar, decompose it, and cut the canopy off from water and nutrients. Unlike leaf and berry diseases you can see from the row, root rots do their damage out of sight, so by the time the canopy shows distress a large share of the root system is already destroyed. Root rots are most common — and most destructive — on land recently cleared from forest, because the fungi survive for years on old tree stumps and buried roots. When coffee is planted straight into that ground, the young trees grow their roots directly into a reservoir of living inoculum.

The main culprits

Three fungal groups account for most serious coffee root rot worldwide. They look different underground, which is exactly why diagnosis means digging.

Armillaria root rot (honey fungus)

Armillaria is the most widely reported root pathogen of coffee. Its calling card is the rhizomorph — a black, shoelace-like strand that grows through the soil and lets the fungus hunt for new roots even across gaps between trees. Peel back the bark of an infected root or collar and you often find a sheet of creamy-white, fan-shaped mycelium; in advanced decay the wood turns into a wet white mass streaked with dark "zone lines." In late wet-season conditions, clusters of honey-coloured mushrooms may sprout at the base of a dying tree. Infection usually traces back to shade trees or to stumps and roots left in the ground when the plot was cleared.

Rosellinia black root rot

Rosellinia begins as a white, cottony bloom on the roots that thickens into dense mats over the roots and trunk base, then darkens with age into black, branching strands firmly welded to the root surface — hence "black root rot." It thrives in humid, acidic, organic-rich soils. It can be brutally fast: in inoculation trials young coffee seedlings can die within weeks, and infected field trees typically defoliate and die within one to three years.

Brown root rot

Brown root rot, caused by Phellinus noxius, wraps roots and the lower stem in a hard, dark crust often studded with adhering soil. It has destroyed plantations of coffee, tea, cocoa, rubber and oil palm established on cleared forest sites, because the fungus persists on decaying roots for a decade or more and moves steadily from tree to tree along root contacts.

Above-ground symptoms: decline in patches

From the canopy, all three look frustratingly alike and unspecific — the tree simply declines. Watch for:

  • Wilting even when soil moisture seems adequate, because the rotted roots can no longer move water.
  • Yellowing (chlorosis) and gradual leaf drop, often shedding before leaves fully brown.
  • Sparse, stunted new growth and small, shrivelled cherries.
  • Branch dieback and eventual death of the whole tree, usually within one to three years of infection.
  • An expanding patch — the single most useful clue. Trees die in a widening ring or blob as the fungus creeps outward through soil and root contacts, rather than at random across the block.

Because these signs overlap with drought, waterlogging and nutrient starvation, the canopy alone cannot confirm root rot. That takes a spade.

How to diagnose it

Diagnosis means digging. Excavate the root system and collar of a freshly declining tree — not one that is already dead and colonised by secondary rots — and inspect it. Look for the black bootlace rhizomorphs and white bark-fans of Armillaria, the darkening cottony mats and black strands of Rosellinia, or the hard brown-black crust of brown root rot. Slicing into the collar to check for white, decayed, zone-lined wood helps confirm and distinguish the pathogen. Why cleared forest land is the danger zone

All three fungi are wood decayers that live for years inside old stumps and buried roots. Clear a patch of forest, leave the stumps, and plant coffee among them, and you have effectively seeded the plot with inoculum. The pathogens colonise the dead wood, then jump to the living coffee roots that grow into contact with it. Managing and preventing coffee root rot

There is no quick chemical cure once a tree is infected; management is about removing inoculum and stopping spread. The core measures:

  • Uproot and destroy infected trees completely — including as much of the root system, collar and stump as you can dig out. Leaving roots in the ground just leaves food for the fungus.
  • Dig isolation trenches around an infection centre, deep enough to sever root contacts and the shallow rhizomorphs, so the fungus cannot cross into healthy rows.
  • Remove old forest stumps and buried wood before planting. On newly cleared land this is the single most valuable step, and it is far cheaper before establishment than after.
  • Do not replant coffee straight back into an infected spot. Rest the ground, remove residual roots, and consider a non-host break crop before re-establishing.
  • Improve drainage. Waterlogged, poorly drained soil stresses roots and favours several rot fungi, so shaping the land to shed water helps.
  • Use tolerant rootstocks and healthy planting material. Starting with clean, vigorous seedlings from a well-run coffee nursery — and grafting onto more tolerant rootstocks where available — reduces early losses.

Root rot versus other below-ground threats

Coffee has several enemies that attack from below, and they call for different responses, so it is worth telling them apart.

  • Root rot is a group of wood-rotting fungi that decompose the roots and collar, killing trees in spreading patches from an inoculum source such as old stumps.
