What are coffee nematodes?

Nematodes are tiny, thread-like roundworms, most no longer than a millimetre, that live in soil and plant tissue. Thousands of species exist, and while many are harmless or even beneficial, a handful are serious plant parasites. On coffee, two groups do the most economic damage: root-knot nematodes and root-lesion nematodes. Both feed on the fine feeder roots that the plant relies on to take up water and minerals, and both are among the most widespread root problems in coffee worldwide.

Understanding coffee nematodes matters because they interact with almost every other part of production. Weakened roots make trees more vulnerable to drought, poor nutrition, and secondary infections, and infested nursery soil can spread the problem into a brand-new planting. Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.)

Root-knot nematodes are named for the swollen galls, or knots, they trigger on the roots. A juvenile worm enters a feeder root, sets up a permanent feeding site, and hijacks the plant's own cells to create enlarged giant cells that swell the tissue into a gall. These galls disrupt the flow of water and nutrients up the plant. The key coffee-attacking species include Meloidogyne exigua, M. incognita, and the aggressive M. paranaensis, along with M. arenaria. In southern Minas Gerais, Brazil — one of the most heavily surveyed coffee regions on earth — M. exigua is by far the most common. M. paranaensis is the most destructive of the group: it can reduce the root volume of a five-year-old arabica tree by roughly 85% and frequently kills the plant outright.

Root-lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus spp.)

Root-lesion nematodes do not form galls. Instead they burrow through the root as migratory feeders, leaving behind dark, necrotic (dead) lesions and open wounds that fungi and bacteria then invade. Pratylenchus coffeae is considered the most economically important root-lesion nematode on coffee worldwide and is highly damaging to arabica. In robusta plantings in Indonesia, P. coffeae has been linked to yield losses ranging from about 29% to 78%. A related migratory species, Radopholus similis, also attacks coffee roots in some regions.

Symptoms and why they fool growers

The most dangerous thing about coffee nematodes is how ordinary the above-ground symptoms look. Because the parasites shrink the root system, the tree cannot pull up enough water and nutrients, so it shows the classic signs of general stress rather than an obvious pest attack:

  • Chlorosis — yellowing of leaves, especially between the veins, mimicking a nitrogen or magnesium shortage.
  • Stunting — trees that stay small and grow slowly despite good fertilisation.
  • Patchy decline — vigour drops in irregular patches across a field, following the spread of nematodes in the soil.
  • Reduced yield and dieback — fewer cherries, foliar necrosis, leaf drop, and in severe cases the gradual death of the tree.
  • Poor drought tolerance — a damaged root system cannot buffer dry spells, so infested trees wilt first.

Because these signs so closely resemble nutrient deficiency, many farmers respond by adding more fertiliser — which does little, because the problem is the roots' inability to absorb it. The only reliable way to confirm coffee nematodes is to dig up a struggling plant and inspect the roots for galls or lesions, and ideally send a soil-and-root sample to a laboratory for a nematode count and species identification.

Where coffee nematodes cause the most damage

Coffee nematodes are a global problem, but a few origins carry an especially heavy burden. Brazil, the world's largest producer, contends widely with Meloidogyne species across its arabica belt. Central America — including Guatemala, where M. paranaensis has been detected — battles both root-knot and root-lesion nematodes. In Vietnam's Central Highlands, surveys of robusta plantations in Dak Lak province repeatedly find Pratylenchus coffeae and Meloidogyne incognita as the most damaging genera in the roots. The problem is often worst on replanted land, where nematode populations have built up in the soil over the life of the previous crop.

Nematodes spread slowly on their own, but they travel fast with human help — in runoff and irrigation water, on contaminated tools and footwear, and above all in infested seedlings and soil moved between plots. That is why a single careless batch of nursery stock can seed a problem that haunts a farm for decades.

How farmers manage coffee nematodes

There is no single cure. Effective control combines resistant planting material, clean nurseries, and good soil care into an integrated program.

Resistant rootstocks and grafting

The most powerful tool is genetic. Because many robustas (Coffea canephora) tolerate nematodes far better than arabica, growers graft an arabica scion — the variety that produces the cup they want — onto a nematode-resistant robusta rootstock. The best-known example is Nemaya, a robusta rootstock cultivar developed by PROMECAFE and CIRAD for Central America. Nemaya is resistant to several root-knot species, including M. exigua, M. arenaria, and M. paranaensis, and tolerant of Pratylenchus. Clean nurseries and healthy soil

Prevention starts before a seedling ever reaches the field. Using nematode-free soil or sterilised media in the coffee nursery stops young plants from arriving pre-infested. Raised beds, clean water, and careful sanitation — cleaning tools and boots, and never moving soil from an infested block — keep populations from spreading. Organic amendments such as compost and well-rotted manure encourage the beneficial soil microbes and fungi that naturally suppress nematodes.

Cultural and biological controls

  • Resistant and tolerant varieties: beyond grafting, some arabica selections carry partial resistance to specific Meloidogyne species.
  • Fallow and rotation: resting infested replant land or growing non-host cover crops lowers soil populations before replanting.
  • Biological agents: fungi such as Purpureocillium lilacinum and Trichoderma harzianum, and mycorrhizal partnerships, can parasitise nematodes or strengthen roots.
  • Nematicides: chemical products are used mainly on large estates and are increasingly restricted for environmental and safety reasons, so they are best treated as a supplement to genetic and cultural control rather than a stand-alone fix.
