Andungsari: The Arabica Indonesia Bred for Itself

The andungsari coffee variety is a small family of Indonesian arabica cultivars — met most often as Andungsari 1 (AS 1) and the clone AS 2K — selected and released in East Java by Pusat Penelitian Kopi dan Kakao Indonesia, the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute. That makes it an unusual entry on any variety list: an arabica that Indonesia bred for itself, rather than one that arrived on a ship and was renamed. The public record is real but thin, so this page separates what is documented from what is merely repeated.

What the andungsari coffee variety actually is

Andungsari is not one plant. It is a sequence of releases from the institute known in Indonesian as Puslitkoka and in English as ICCRI — an organization founded in 1911, in the Dutch colonial period, and still running arabica selection out of an experimental station, Kebun Percobaan Andungsari, in the East Java highlands. The variety takes its name from the station rather than from a farmer, a village or a discoverer, and that naming convention is the clue to everything else about it: this is institutional material, evaluated and formally registered, not a plant somebody noticed in a hedgerow.

Three names matter, and each carries a Ministry of Agriculture decree that fixes its year on the record:

  • Andungsari 1, listed by the institute as Kopi Arabika Varietas AS 1, registered under a 2001 decree.
  • AS 2K, registered under a 2010 decree and catalogued explicitly as a clone — the institute's own product name is Kopi Arabika Klon AS2K, and the K is generally read as klon, Indonesian for clone.
  • Komasti, registered in 2013, a contraction of Komposit Andungsari Tiga, roughly "Andungsari Composite Three". The institute describes it as six genotypes that look alike but carry different resistance genes, bundled on purpose so that a planting is not one single target for one race of a pathogen.

Three registrations in twelve years is the signature of a program iterating on a problem, not of a one-off release. Understanding what that problem was is the whole story of this variety.

Indonesia as a breeder, not only a recipient

Most variety pages describe material that came from somewhere else. Bourbon came from Réunion. Typica moved through Amsterdam. The Catimor family was assembled in Portugal. Andungsari is the opposite case, and the reason runs back to the 1870s.

Coffee leaf rust, Hemileia vastatrix, was formally described in 1869 and reached Java within a few years. Over the following decades it gutted the island's arabica estates. Growers replanted with Coffea liberica, which did not hold either; robusta followed around the turn of the twentieth century and worked so well that robusta still accounts for the large majority of Indonesian coffee production more than a century later. Indonesia is one of the very few major origins where arabica was not merely damaged by rust but pushed off most of its growing area entirely, and never fully returned to it.

A country with that history has an unusually strong motive to breed its own resistant arabica — and to breed it for its own conditions rather than adopt somebody else's answer. Those conditions are specific. Equatorial highlands have no dry season sharp enough to break a fungal cycle, so rust pressure is closer to a constant than to a seasonal spike. The arabica that survives sits in narrow altitude bands above the robusta belt. And the growing unit is overwhelmingly the smallholder plot, where a compact tree that can be picked from the ground, planted densely, is worth more than a tall one that needs a ladder. Andungsari is what a breeding program aimed at exactly that set of constraints produced, and the shape of the material follows directly: semi-dwarf, densely branched, high-yielding under good nutrition.

Lineage: what is reported, and how thin the record is

Handle the parentage carefully. Andungsari is routinely described as a selection out of Catimor material — the Caturra × Timor Hybrid family bred to carry rust resistance in a compact plant, which our Catimor variety guide covers in full. The resistance in that family traces back to the spontaneous arabica–robusta cross found on Timor, the subject of our Timor Hybrid guide. Genetically, then, Andungsari is placed in the Catimor and Sarchimor neighborhood, which is exactly where a rust-driven national program would be expected to fish.

What is missing is the documentation. The institute's own public release pages for AS 1 and AS 2K describe morphology, planting recommendations and productivity potential in detail — leaf shape, branch length, fruit weight — but they do not publish a pedigree. No accession, no cross, no generation, no selection year. The English-language literature is thinner still, and the selection and release dates that circulate in secondary summaries do not agree either with each other or with the decree years above. Treat any confident Andungsari family tree, and any precise breeding chronology, as inference rather than record. The Catimor-family placement is a reasonable and widely repeated reading; it is not a published pedigree, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

In the field: stature, altitude and the rust rating nobody quotes

The physical description is the best-documented part of the record. The institute characterizes AS 1 as a semi-dwarf plant with broadly oval, slightly thin leaves and medium, oval fruit. AS 2K is described as semi-dwarf with a fairly wide, sturdy canopy, near-horizontal primary branching averaging a little over a meter, short internodes and active secondary branching; mature leaves dark green, new flush reddish-brown, ripe fruit bright red and clustered tightly. In other words, the Catimor-family body plan: compact, dense, harvested from the ground, suited to close spacing and full sun.

The published productivity figures are station numbers under station management, and should be read as ceilings rather than expectations: above 2 tonnes of green coffee per hectare for AS 1 at a density of 2,000 trees per hectare, and roughly 2.3 tonnes per hectare per year for AS 2K. Yields of that order are fertilizer-dependent. The same plant on an under-fed plot will look ordinary and will exhaust itself faster, which is the standing trade-off with compact, high-density material everywhere it is planted.

Then comes the detail that almost never survives into secondary write-ups. The institute's own release page for AS 1 rates it agak rentan karat daun kopi — somewhat susceptible to coffee leaf rust — and pairs that with a planting recommendation above 1,000 m. The same page lists it as susceptible to the parasitic nematodes Pratylenchus and Radopholus similis, a separate and often decisive problem in Indonesian soils. The Komasti composite is later described as rust-resistant, and it too is noted as vulnerable to nematodes and to coffee berry borer.

So the honest reading of "Indonesia's rust-resistant arabica" is more interesting than the slogan. Resistance was not finished in the first release. The altitude recommendation is doing part of the work, because rust pressure falls as elevation rises. And the sequence AS 1 to AS 2K to Komasti reads as the program answering its own gaps in public: first a clone, so that a nursery ships a genetic copy of exactly what was tested instead of a segregating seedling, and then a composite deliberately assembled from several genotypes carrying different resistance genes. That last move is a plain admission that single-source resistance in this family does not hold forever — which is true of every Timor-Hybrid-derived variety anywhere in the world, not a criticism unique to Andungsari.

What Andungsari tastes like — honestly

The institute's release sheet for AS 1 describes cup quality as good, even excellent. That is a release-sheet descriptor written to support adoption, not a published cupping report, and it should be read as such. Beyond that, very little exists: no widely available body of third-party cupping data, and no established habit of isolating Andungsari as a single-variety lot for export.

What can be said with confidence is structural rather than varietal. Catimor-family plants grown at genuinely high elevation, picked ripe and processed carefully, give clean, sweet, medium-bodied cups that stand up perfectly well. The same genetics planted low, over-cropped and under-fed give the flat, woody, faintly harsh cup that saddled the whole Catimor family with its reputation problem. Variation in Catimor-type coffees tracks altitude, nutrition and picking discipline far more than it tracks the cultivar name, and nothing in the Andungsari record suggests it escapes that rule.

Where it is planted, and what it sits beside

Andungsari's home ground is East Java, where the research station sits and where the island's arabica has been concentrated since the estates rebuilt after rust. What matters for this page is that Andungsari is a Java arabica in the most literal sense available: bred on the island, for the island, and planted there first.

Beyond Java the picture gets vaguer, and it is worth saying so rather than filling the gap. The institute reports the later Komasti release spreading to growers in North Sumatra and on the Wilis slopes of East Java, but detailed planted-area data for the Andungsari releases themselves is not published in any accessible form. Sumatra is the country's dominant arabica landscape and has its own distinct processing culture built around wet-hulling, covered in our Sumatra coffee guide; how much Andungsari material sits inside it is simply not a documented number.

What is clear is that Andungsari did not sweep the country. Across Indonesian arabica regions the introduced and older material still occupies far more ground: Sigararutang, prized for how quickly it comes into bearing; Kartika, a Catuai-derived introduction; Lini S, better known internationally as S 795; USDA 762; and the Aceh-specific Gayo releases. Andungsari is nationally bred and nationally promoted, and it is still a minority planting.

The clone is the quiet advantage in that company. Seed-propagated Catimor-family material segregates, so what a nursery ships drifts away from what the breeder tested within a generation or two. A registered clone does not have that problem — but it does require nurseries capable of vegetative propagation, which is a genuine bottleneck for smallholder distribution and one plain reason a technically sound release does not automatically become a widespread one. Breeding a variety and getting it into the ground are two different programs.

A variety name is not a quality grade

This matters more for Andungsari than for most varieties, because the material is promoted domestically on productivity and resilience first. Seeing "Andungsari", "AS 1" or "AS 2K" on a spec sheet tells you the plant is semi-dwarf, probably densely planted, probably fertilized, probably above 1,000 m. It tells you nothing about ripeness at picking, fermentation control, drying, or whether the lot was screened — and those decide the cup. A carefully run Andungsari lot from high ground will out-cup a careless Bourbon lot every time, and the reverse holds just as reliably. Read the name as agronomic information about the tree, not as a grade on the coffee.

The bottom line

Andungsari is worth knowing for what it represents rather than for what it tastes like: a national breeding program in a country whose arabica was nearly erased by leaf rust, producing compact, input-responsive material designed around its own altitude bands, its own disease pressure and its own smallholder plots. The genetics are reported as Catimor-derived and are not documented in public in any detail. The registrations are datable — 2001, 2010, 2013 — but the breeding history behind them is not. And the rust resistance is partial enough that the breeder's own later releases were built to shore it up. State all of that plainly and Andungsari is a genuinely interesting entry on an Indonesian variety list. Overstate any part of it and you are just repeating a leaflet.
