The S274 coffee variety — Selection 274, catalogued by World Coffee Research as Sln.1R — is a robusta (Coffea canephora) selection released by the Central Coffee Research Institute in the Baba Budan hill country of Karnataka, and for decades the dominant planted robusta of that producing origin. Its real distinction is not agronomic. It is that S274 has a name the trade actually uses, in a species that is otherwise sold almost entirely anonymously.

That asymmetry is the whole story. Arabica travels with a public catalogue of named varieties — Bourbon, Typica, Caturra, Geisha, SL28, and hundreds of local and regional names beyond the formally described ones. Robusta travels as grade, screen size, moisture and origin. A container of robusta is described by what it measures, not by what it is. S274 is one of a small handful of exceptions.

Two of those individuals — reported as S.270 and S.274 — were released together, not as a single pure line.

Even the propagation method is reported two ways, and it is worth being straight about that. Origin-facing accounts describe S.270 and S.274 as the seedling progenies of two selected mother plants, which makes the release a seed-propagated one — the framing under which S274 is usually presented as a rare named robusta variety. The World Coffee Research entry instead files Sln.1R as two required clones that have to be planted together, in a catalogue whose type filter separates clones from polyclonal and polyclonal-synthetic material. Why robusta almost never has a variety name

To get a uniform robusta field, you propagate it vegetatively, from cuttings or grafts. That is why most improved canephora material reaches growers as clone codes rather than as names anyone outside the nursery trade would recognize.

The second is the value chain. Robusta has historically been bought for volume and consistency, blended in large lots, and destined for instant coffee and espresso bases. This is where honesty is more useful than confidence. The lineage of S274 is reported inconsistently, and anyone offering you a clean pedigree is overstating the record.

The widely repeated popular account is that the material traces back to an introduced collection — a Sri Lankan collection is the version that recurs most often — and that S274 is therefore a straight C. canephora selection out of introduced germplasm. That account appears on many origin-facing pages, but the primary documentation behind it is thin and the sources largely echo one another.

Complicating it further, the World Coffee Research entry for Sln.1R carries a genetic description referencing Coffea congensis crossed to Coffea canephora with recurrent backcrossing to robusta, and files the variety in a group defined by that interspecific cross. The same description and the same group appear on the entry for Sln.3R — the station’s later release, popularly called CxR, which was deliberately bred to move the compact stature of C. congensis into robusta. Whether the identical text on the Sln.1R entry reflects a real interspecific component in S274, or is inherited from how the database groups that station’s robusta releases, is not something the public record resolves.

The safe formulation is the honest one: S274 is documented as a selection released by the Balehonnur station and is universally treated as robusta; its exact ancestry is claimed rather than demonstrated in accessible sources, and the accounts conflict. Reporting that conflict is more accurate than picking a side.

How the plant behaves in the field

Field descriptions are more consistent than genealogical ones, though most of what circulates is extension-service and nursery description rather than published trial data.

  • Stature and vigor. Described as very vigorous, well-branched and wide-spreading, developing into a substantial bush or moderately large tree — sturdier and more sprawling than the compact material bred later. Its bulk is exactly why later breeding at the same station aimed at compactness, since a smaller plant allows closer spacing. Worth noting: the main variety database describes the plants as vigorous and moderately large while simultaneously tagging the growth habit as dwarf or compact. That contradiction sits inside a single entry, and it is a fair measure of how thin the structured data on robusta varieties still is.
  • Cropping. Cherries are described as forming in dense clusters along the branches, with the plant carrying a heavy fruit load, and the fruit is listed as ripening late in the season. Published yield figures vary widely by source and by management assumption — long-run rainfed averages reported for the S.270/S.274 pairing sit far below the potential figures quoted for irrigated, well-managed, single-stem plantings. Treat any single number you see as a claim tied to a specific management regime, not as a property of the plant.
  • Altitude. Like robusta generally, it belongs at the lower elevations of a producing region rather than on the high slopes arabica occupies — broadly the warm, humid mid- and low-elevation belt.

What it tastes like, in honest terms

Two lazy positions dominate writing about robusta cup quality, and both should be resisted. The first is that robusta is simply bad — harsh, rubbery, fit only for filler. The second, a recent overcorrection, is that robusta is secretly excellent and only prejudice holds it back.

The truthful version is narrower. Robusta carries more caffeine and more chlorogenic acids than arabica, which pushes the cup toward bitterness and body and away from the aromatic high notes arabica is prized for. It gives weight, a persistent crema in espresso, and a savory, grain-and-cocoa direction rather than a floral or fruit-forward one. Where robusta has historically cupped poorly, the cause has very often been the way it was handled — strip-picked with unripe and overripe cherry together, dried on bare ground, stored roughly — because the market signal never rewarded better. Where robusta is picked ripe and processed carefully, it cups markedly better than its reputation, which is what the recent wave of fine-robusta work keeps demonstrating.

For S274 specifically, descriptors that recur include chocolate, nut and caramel with a spice edge, alongside the earthy, woody register robusta is known for; origin-facing liquor notes tend to describe the cup as balanced, with good body. Take those as typical rather than diagnostic. No cup score should be attached to the name: nothing in the public record supports treating S274 as a quality tier, and the same seed lot processed two different ways will land in two different places.

Where it is actually planted

S274 is, first and last, the robusta of one producing origin. India grows both commercial species, and its robusta plantings — concentrated in the hill districts of the southwest — have for decades leaned on this selection, to the point where later releases from the same station are routinely positioned as improvements on it. That is the clearest measure of its standing: it became the benchmark, the thing newer clonal and compact material had to beat on stature, bean size or productivity.

What a variety name legitimately tells you is what to expect from the plant: rough stature, cropping habit, broad disease posture, a general flavor direction. What it cannot tell you is whether the cherry was picked ripe, how it was dried, or how long the parchment sat. Those decide the cup. If a bag names S274 and says nothing about picking, processing or drying, the name is doing decorative work.
