The rubi coffee variety is a Brazilian commercial arabica, catalogued on seed lists as Rubi MG 1192 and selected out of Mundo Novo x Catuai breeding material by Brazil's public agricultural research system. It is planted for vegetative vigour, steady production and adaptability across a wide range of growing conditions — not for disease resistance, which it does not carry.
That absence is the most useful thing to understand about it. A great deal of modern Brazilian breeding has been aimed at moving coffee leaf rust resistance from the Timor Hybrid into commercial plants, producing the Sarchimor and Catimor families and their many descendants. Rubi sits on the other side of that divide entirely. Its pedigree is arabica of the Bourbon and Typica lineages, with no Coffea canephora ancestry behind it, and it has earned its planted area on agronomic behaviour alone.
Where the Rubi cultivar came from
The breeding story is reported consistently in outline and inconsistently in detail, so it is worth separating the two.
The outline: an artificial cross between Mundo Novo and Catuai was made at the Instituto Agronomico de Campinas (IAC) in Sao Paulo state, generally dated to the 1960s. The goal was to combine what each parent was good at — the vigour, productivity and adaptability of Mundo Novo with the compact stature, uniform ripening and pruning response of Catuai. In the early 1970s this material was introduced into Minas Gerais by the state agricultural research system, credited in the Brazilian literature to EPAMIG (the Minas Gerais agricultural research corporation) working with the Federal University of Vicosa and the Federal University of Lavras. Progenies were selected and backcrossed to the Catuai parent, and the work — carried out across several growing regions of the state — eventually produced two commercial cultivars: Rubi and Topazio. The specific line that became Rubi is recorded as MG-1192.
The detail that sources handle differently: which Catuai was used as the parent, the number and direction of the backcrosses, which progenies were carried forward, and the year Rubi was formally released for commercial planting. Some descriptions say simply "Mundo Novo x Catuai"; others specify Catuai Amarelo as the female or male parent, which is worth noting because Rubi itself ripens red. Published release dates vary between sources and are frequently repeated second-hand. What can be said without hedging is that the cross traces to IAC in the 1960s, that the selection producing the named cultivar was done in Minas Gerais from the 1970s onward, and that Rubi has been in commercial planting and in official seed distribution for decades — EPAMIG continues to list Rubi MG 1192 among the coffee seed it supplies from its experimental fields at Tres Pontas and Patrocinio. If you need a release year for a label or a lot sheet, attribute it to whichever source you are using rather than treating it as settled.
What "MG 1192" actually means
The number is a lineage identifier from the Minas Gerais research records. It points to the specific selected line that was multiplied and distributed — not to a grade, a screen size, a year, or a separate variety. Sibling numbers sit close together for exactly this reason: Topazio is catalogued as MG 1190, just two apart in the same series, because both selections came out of the same body of Catuai x Mundo Novo material at the same institution. Brazilian cultivar names carry these tags throughout — IAC 44, IAC 99, MGS numbers, UFV numbers — and each is essentially a filing reference for a particular selection line. Seeing "MG 1192" on a seed invoice or a farm map tells you which selection is in the ground. It tells you nothing about how the coffee will taste.
Why the rubi coffee variety is the non-resistant half of the story
Brazilian arabica cultivars fall broadly into two camps. One descends from the Timor Hybrid, a naturally occurring arabica x robusta cross carrying genes that confer resistance to coffee leaf rust; the Catimor and Sarchimor lines and the long list of Brazilian cultivars built from them belong here. The other is pure arabica of the older commercial lineages, with no rust resistance genes at all, selected instead for how the plant performs — yield, vigour, uniformity, architecture, recovery after pruning. This matters practically. Rubi is listed as susceptible to coffee leaf rust in the Brazilian cultivar descriptions, and growers plant it on the understanding that rust will be managed agronomically rather than genetically. It is also worth saying plainly, because it comes up constantly around varieties: rust resistance derived from Timor Hybrid ancestry is never permanent. Rust populations shift, and resistance that held for years in one region can break down. A variety with no resistance at all is at least honest about what it asks of the grower from the day it goes in the ground.
Some consumer-facing write-ups describe Rubi as having "moderate" rust resistance. Treat that with caution. Nothing in the recorded pedigree supplies a resistance mechanism, and the Brazilian technical descriptions place Rubi among the susceptible cultivars — the same classification they give its sibling Topazio and its Catuai parent. What Rubi does have is a compact, well-balanced plant that holds production without collapsing, which is a different thing entirely, and easy to mistake for resistance if you are reading yield outcomes rather than pathology.

Rubi presents as a Catuai-shaped plant with more of Mundo Novo's engine behind it. The Brazilian descriptions are fairly consistent on the concrete points:
- Stature. Low-growing (porte baixo), with vegetative characteristics repeatedly described as similar to Catuai. Short internodes and a compact canopy are what make it workable in the dense, mechanised plantings that dominate Brazilian coffee.
- Architecture. The plant shape is noted as suiting close row spacing and even circular planting layouts — a practical consideration on farms where machinery, not hand-picking crews, sets the geometry of the field.
- Cherry colour. Red at maturity. This is the single clearest visual difference from its near-sibling Topazio, which ripens yellow.
- Maturation. Described as slightly earlier and more uniform than Catuai, though some comparative tables simply classify it as mid-season. Uniform ripening is a large practical advantage where harvest is stripped or mechanised rather than selectively picked, because it narrows the spread of ripe, underripe and overripe fruit arriving at the mill together.
- Vigour and stamina. High vegetative vigour, and — the point Brazilian sources return to repeatedly — high productive capacity without early exhaustion of the plant or dieback of the bearing branches after a heavy crop. Biennial swing is a fact of life in arabica; Rubi is selected to come back from it rather than to burn out.
- Bean size. Screen distribution is often quoted as a cultivar trait, but published Brazilian trials rank cultivars differently depending on the site and the season. Treat screen size as an outcome of soil, nutrition, crop load and rainfall on a given farm rather than as a fixed property of Rubi.
What Rubi does not have is a headline claim. There is no signature cup attribute attached to it, no rust story, no dwarfing novelty. Its argument to a farmer has always been that it behaves well across a lot of different situations — exactly the sort of quality that is hard to market and easy to underrate.

Where it is planted and why
Rubi's home ground is Minas Gerais, the state that accounts for the largest share of Brazil's arabica, and the Brazilian literature describes it as adapting well to the main coffee regions there — the cerrado plateaus of the west, the rolling south of the state, and the steeper zones further east. It also turns up in trials well outside its comfort zone, and it has served repeatedly as a commercial check cultivar in EPAMIG's breeding evaluations: new progenies are measured against Rubi precisely because its behaviour is familiar and predictable.
The reason a grower reaches for it is usually structural rather than sensory. Compact plants allow closer spacing and suit mechanised operations. Uniform, slightly early ripening compresses the harvest window. High vigour and the absence of branch exhaustion mean the field recovers between crops and responds to pruning cycles. None of that is glamorous, and all of it compounds over the twenty-plus years a coffee field may stay in production.
Cup character, meanwhile, is not really a property of Rubi in the way it is of some celebrated varieties. Rubi is a competent, clean arabica; what a given lot tastes like is driven far more by altitude, soil, climate, ripeness at picking and processing than by the selection number on the seed bag. That relationship between place and cup is the subject of its own discussion in coffee terroir, and it applies to Rubi with unusual force, because the plant itself contributes so little signature of its own.

Against Catuai, Rubi is the close cousin with a slightly earlier and more even ripening and a reputation for holding vigour through heavy crops. Against Mundo Novo, it is much the same productive energy repackaged into a plant a person can prune, spray and harvest without a ladder. Against the Sarchimor and Catimor descendants that now occupy so much Brazilian planting, it is the deliberate opposite choice: no borrowed resistance, no robusta in the background, and a straightforward agronomic bargain in its place.
