The paper trail, and how thin it is

The commonly repeated account runs roughly like this. The material was collected in Ethiopia in the early 1940s by a British agricultural officer serving in the region during the Second World War and taken to Kenya. About a decade later it was imported from Kenya by United States agricultural authorities and forwarded, alongside many other East African accessions, to the public germplasm collection at CATIE in Turrialba, Costa Rica. Onward distributions to research programmes in Brazil and Colombia, and to Portugal's leaf-rust research centre, are also reported.

Every element of that chain is plausible and consistent with the way Ethiopian material actually travelled in the middle of the twentieth century, along the same corridor that carried other, now far more famous Ethiopian collections into Central America. But it appears in near-identical wording across a small number of sources, which usually indicates one origin document and a great deal of copying. Names, dates and the exact route should be read as reported rather than verified. This page will not add a breeder, a release year, a research station or an institutional programme that the record does not support, because Dilla Alghe does not appear to have been released by anyone in the sense a modern variety is released.
