When the same plants are later cut down and left on or turned into the soil to release their nutrients, farmers call the result a green manure — the cover crop is the living stand, the green manure is what it becomes when it is knocked back.
Two related practices are often muddled with cover cropping:
- Mulch is dead plant material — pruned coffee branches, cut grass, coffee husk, straw, leaf litter — spread on the surface. It protects the soil in similar ways, but it does not grow and does not fix nitrogen; it has to be brought in, or cut and laid down. Legume cover crops and nitrogen fixation
The reason legumes dominate the cover-crop conversation is biological nitrogen fixation. Legumes host nitrogen-fixing rhizobia bacteria in nodules on their roots; those bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen gas — which plants cannot use directly — into forms the plant can absorb. When the legume's leaves, roots, and nodules decompose, that nitrogen becomes available to the surrounding coffee, reducing (though rarely eliminating) the need for synthetic nitrogen. That is why cover crops sit close to any conversation about coffee fertilization.
The legume cover crops most often named in coffee systems include:
- Perennial peanut (Arachis pintoi) — a low, creeping forage peanut widely used as a permanent living mulch under trees. Timing matters. When a legume is grown for green manure, agronomists generally advise cutting it at or just before flowering — that is when biomass and fixed nitrogen peak. Weed suppression
A dense stand occupies the niche weeds would otherwise fill, shading the ground and competing for space so fewer weed seeds germinate. Erosion control

Living mulch between the rows
The phrase living mulch describes a cover crop grown as a permanent, low ground cover directly among the crop — doing the job of mulch, but alive and self-renewing. In coffee, a living mulch of a low legume such as perennial peanut is maintained continuously in the alleys between rows, kept from climbing the coffee, and simply mown or trimmed as needed. Because Arachis pintoi tolerates deep shade, it can persist even under a dense canopy, which makes it well suited to shaded and agroforestry coffee.

Competition for water and nutrients
In the dry season, or on already water-stressed sites, a vigorous cover crop can compete with the coffee for soil moisture and nutrients rather than complementing it. This is the central reason growers actively manage the cover — mowing it back, keeping a clear ring around young trees, or choosing a less aggressive species — especially where rainfall is marginal.
Management and mowing
A cover crop is still a crop: it must be established and then contained. Vigorous species like velvet bean will climb and smother coffee if left alone, and any stand needs periodic cutting to keep it low, to time green-manure incorporation, and to stop it setting unwanted seed. Establishment costs seed and labour up front, before any benefit appears.
Harbouring pests and disease
An unmanaged, weedy cover can shelter pests. More specifically, several common coffee cover crops — jack bean, velvet bean, and pigeon pea among them — are good hosts of certain root-lesion nematodes (for example Pratylenchus jaehni), so on plots already infested with these nematodes those species can multiply the problem rather than solve it.
