The catigua coffee variety is not a single plant. Catiguá is a family of dwarf Brazilian arabica cultivars — commonly listed as Catiguá MG1, Catiguá MG2 and Catiguá MG3 — released out of the public coffee breeding programme in Minas Gerais and bred to carry leaf-rust resistance without the cup penalty that dogged the first generation of rust-resistant hybrids. The numbers are not decoration and they are not interchangeable. Of the three, MG2 is the one that genuinely escaped the research plots: it is the Catiguá nurseries propagate, that farms plant, and that turns up on specialty bags.

That is the whole reason this page exists. Most variety write-ups treat "Catiguá" as one thing. It is not. The three siblings share a pedigree and a stature, but they were selected for different jobs, and only one of them is a name you are likely to meet in a roastery.

What the catigua coffee variety actually is

Catiguá is a group of Coffea arabica cultivars developed by the public coffee breeding programme in Minas Gerais — led by EPAMIG, the Minas Gerais state agricultural research agency, working with the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, and published alongside Embrapa Café within Brazil's national coffee research consortium. That collective framing is the honest one. This is institutional public breeding carried out over decades by teams, not a single named breeder's project, and confident sole attributions online are worth treating with suspicion.

The founding cross is documented. It was made in 1980 at Viçosa between the cultivar Catuaí Amarelo IAC 86 and a plant of the Timor Hybrid selection designated UFV 440-10. The resulting F1 plants were coded in the H 514 series, and the plant numbered H 514-7 is the one the whole family descends from. Progenies were advanced by the genealogical method and grown out on EPAMIG's experimental field at Patrocínio, in the Cerrado Mineiro. Two F4 progenies — recorded in the Brazilian literature as H 514-7-14-2 and H 514-7-16-3 — gave rise to Catiguá MG1 and Catiguá MG2 at the F5 generation, with Catiguá MG3 coming out of later selection in the same material.

Where the record does go thin is the name itself. Explanations circulate for what "Catiguá" refers to, but they are repeated far more often than they are sourced, so this page will not pick one. What is documented is where the work happened, which is Patrocínio and the surrounding Cerrado.

The lineage, and the Sarchimor label that keeps getting stuck to it

Catiguá is frequently and incorrectly filed as a Sarchimor. It is not one. A Sarchimor is the specific cross of Villa Sarchi with the Timor Hybrid accession CIFC 832/2, and if you want that lineage properly explained, the Sarchimor variety guide covers it. Catiguá's Timor Hybrid parent is a different accession entirely — UFV 440-10 — and its arabica parent is not Villa Sarchi but Catuaí, the compact Brazilian workhorse that already dominates the country's planted area.

Nor is Catiguá a Catimor in the strict sense, since Catimor denotes Caturra crossed with Timor Hybrid material of the 832/1 line. The Brazilian Catuaí × Timor Hybrid derivatives sit in their own group, and EPAMIG's own cultivar listings make the pattern visible: Paraíso MG H 419-1 comes from Catuaí Amarelo IAC 30 crossed with Timor Hybrid UFV 445-46, Pau-Brasil MG1 from Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 crossed with Timor Hybrid UFV 442-34. Same recipe, different accessions, different cultivars. Catiguá is one entry in that Brazilian family, not a branch of the Costa Rican one.

What all of them share is the source of the resistance: introgressed genes from the Timor Hybrid, the natural arabica–robusta hybrid that underwrites nearly every rust-resistant arabica in commercial cultivation. Catiguá's reason for existing is to keep the resistance and shed that reputation — and on the available evidence, MG2 largely did.

MG1, MG2 and MG3: the numbers are not interchangeable

Because all three come from one cross, published descriptors separate them by fine detail and by intended use rather than by dramatic differences in appearance. All three are low-statured, red-fruited, rust-resistant and described as high in vegetative vigour and productive capacity.

Catiguá MG1 is described in EPAMIG's cultivar material as high vigour, high sieve — that is, larger beans — with high productive capacity and intermediate maturation. It is a legitimate release, but it is not the one that travelled. It is largely absent from commercial nursery catalogues and green-coffee offer sheets, and it is not the Catiguá that appears in EPAMIG's recent seed-availability notices. Treat MG1 as a documented cultivar you are unlikely to encounter rather than a live planting option, unless a specific seed source says otherwise.

Catiguá MG2 is the one that stuck. EPAMIG's description flags it specifically for specialty production and high beverage quality, and MG2 is the Catiguá that has appeared in the agency's recent seed offers to producers. It is also the one with the competition record: Catiguá MG2 lots from Minas Gerais have won and placed at Brazil's Coffee of the Year competition, including a 2021 winner. When a bag says only "Catiguá", MG2 is the safe assumption — though it is an assumption, and worth confirming.

Catiguá MG3 is the specialist. Alongside the shared rust resistance it carries resistance to the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne exigua, and Brazilian recommendations point it at sites carrying nematode pressure on top of rust. Like MG1 it is described with high sieve and high productive capacity. It is a soil-problem cultivar first and a cup cultivar second, which is not a criticism, just a different brief.

One place to be careful: nematodes. EPAMIG's descriptions attach Meloidogyne exigua resistance to MG3 and not to MG1 or MG2, and World Coffee Research lists MG2 as susceptible to nematodes. Secondary tables and retail pages routinely blur the three numbers into one entry, so if nematode pressure is the reason you are choosing a cultivar, verify against the seed supplier's own documentation rather than a summary table.

How the plant behaves in the field

Catiguá is dwarf, and that single trait explains most of its adoption. Compact plants tolerate the tight spacing and mechanised operations that define large-scale Brazilian coffee farming, and they keep pruning cycles manageable. Brazilian planting guidance for these cultivars puts in-row spacing at roughly half a metre to a metre between plants — dense by the standards of most origins, and only workable because the plants stay short.

Beyond stature, the useful field notes on MG2 are these. It is described as broadly adaptable across environments and drought-tolerant, which is a genuinely valuable pairing in the Cerrado, where dry spells are routine. It carries high vegetative vigour and high productive capacity in EPAMIG's description. Bean size is the trade-off: where MG1 and MG3 are credited with high sieve, World Coffee Research reports MG2 as below average, which matters if you are sorting to a screen specification rather than cupping the lot.

One characteristic cuts against the "bred for mechanisation" story and deserves stating plainly. MG2's cherries are reported to hold firmly to the branch. That reduces losses to natural drop, a real advantage on a slope or through a rainy harvest, but it makes mechanical stripping harder. The plant's architecture suits machines while its detachment force resists them. Anyone planting it for a fully mechanised operation should treat that as a live question rather than a settled benefit.

On rust, be precise. Catiguá was selected as resistant to the races of Hemileia vastatrix prevalent when it was developed. Rust is not a fixed opponent — it is a population that mutates and recombines, and the history of every Timor Hybrid derivative from Catimor onward is a history of resistance breaking down somewhere, eventually. Resistance here is real, valuable and time-limited. Plant Catiguá because it lowers rust risk today, keep scouting anyway, and do not build a farm plan that assumes the resistance is permanent.

What Catiguá MG2 tastes like

Honest framing first: the cup evidence for Catiguá MG2 is better than for most rust-resistant cultivars, but it is still mostly Brazilian evaluation data and competition results rather than a broad international body of comparative cupping. What that evidence says is consistent. EPAMIG describes MG2 as suited to specialty production with high beverage quality; World Coffee Research rates its quality potential as very good at high elevation and notes it showing better cup quality than traditional cultivars at lower ones. Published Brazilian descriptions converge on citric acidity, chocolate-leaning aromatics, clear sweetness and a clean, rounded body — a well-executed Cerrado profile rather than anything exotic.

Brazilian processing work that has included MG2 also reports the cultivar reaching specialty grade comfortably, with the descriptor set moving substantially by processing route: naturals and extended fermentations pushing toward ripe red fruit and fermented, alcoholic notes, pulped and washed treatments landing nearer cereal, nut and cocoa. That is worth noticing for what it implies. With MG2, the processing decision moves the cup at least as much as the genetics do.

For a roaster, the practical expectation is a dependable, sweet, chocolate-and-citrus Brazilian arabica that will not announce itself as rust-resistant in the cup, which is precisely the point of the breeding. The smaller bean size is the thing to plan around: a tighter screen means faster heat penetration, so approach a first roast with slightly more conservative charge energy than you would use for a large-screen Bourbon-type lot, and expect development to run quicker than the weight of the batch suggests.

Where it is actually planted

The centre of gravity is Minas Gerais — the Cerrado Mineiro and Alto Paranaíba in particular, which is both where the selection work happened and where the competition-winning lots have come from. Beyond Brazil, MG2 has been entered into international variety evaluation: World Coffee Research has assessed it across multiple sites and countries in its multilocation trial network, which is how a Brazilian public cultivar gets its behaviour measured outside its home environment.

Commercial plantings outside Brazil are a thinner story. Catiguá MG2 turns up occasionally on offer sheets from other producing countries, and those claims are plausible — the material has moved through formal trial channels — but the public record of planted area outside Brazil is sparse enough that it is not worth asserting. If a bag from a non-Brazilian origin claims Catiguá, ask the importer where the seed came from.

Reading a bag that says "Catiguá"

A variety name is not a quality grade. Catiguá MG2 has a good sensory record, but that record was set by particular farms at particular elevations with careful picking and processing, and the same cultivar grown low, stripped indiscriminately and dried badly will cup like any other mishandled coffee. The variety tells you what the plant can do, not what this lot did.

Three practical checks. First, ask which number: "Catiguá" alone almost certainly means MG2, but MG3 lots exist and were selected for different reasons. Second, be wary of any bag or website that calls it a Sarchimor — it is a small error, but it signals a description that was copied rather than sourced. Third, note the elevation and the processing, because on the published evidence those move a Catiguá cup more than the cultivar name does.

The bottom line

Catiguá is a numbered Brazilian family, not a single variety, and MG2 is the member that matters commercially: dwarf, vigorous, productive, rust-resistant against the races it was bred against, drought-tolerant enough for the Cerrado, smaller-beaned than its siblings, and — unusually for a Timor Hybrid derivative — genuinely well regarded in the cup. MG1 is documented but has largely dropped out of circulation; MG3 is a nematode-pressure tool rather than a specialty pick.
