The name is a promise the plant never kept

The standard plant databases give the authorship as Swynnerton and Philipson and place the description in the 1930s, and that is about as far as the firm provenance goes.

The timing is the interesting part. The decades around that description were the great era of wild coffee prospecting. Cultivated coffee had already been humbled once by leaf rust in Asia, arabica was known to rest on a startlingly narrow genetic base, and botanists and agricultural services across Africa were combing forests for wild coffees that might carry disease resistance, drought tolerance or some other rescue for a crop that looked fragile. Attaching a rescuer's name to a newly described forest coffee fits that mood exactly, whether or not anyone wrote the reasoning down.

What should not be repeated is a number. Published figures for salvatrix seed caffeine differ noticeably between sources, which is exactly what tends to happen when few samples, few collected accessions and different analytical methods sit behind a widely copied statistic. Low, and reliably lower than arabica, is what the record supports. A precise figure quoted to two decimal places is not: that is one paper's sample, not the species.
