The p88 coffee variety is a working smallholder arabica line in the Gayo highlands of Aceh, in northern Sumatra, planted for vigour and reported disease tolerance rather than for anything a catalogue could verify. Farmers know it, nurseries sell it, cooperatives distribute it. What “P88” formally denotes — which numbered selection, from which programme, out of which parent material — is reported loosely, and differently, by different sources. Both of those things are true at once, and the second is the more interesting one.
This is not a line whose story is unknown. It is one whose story is told confidently in several incompatible versions, none of which appears to rest on a published pedigree. The practical consequence is blunt: two growers can both plant “P88” and be planting different things, and a bag carrying the name tells you a great deal about how planting material moves through northern Sumatra and very little about what is in the cup.
What the p88 coffee variety actually is
P88 is an arabica selection, almost always described as Catimor-derived, that has been part of the working cultivar mix in Aceh since roughly the late 1980s. It is named again and again alongside Timtim, Borbor, Ateng Super and BP 542A in Indonesian accounts of what Gayo smallholders actually grow — the local material, as distinct from the international variety names that appear on export paperwork.
The revealing detail is what happened to its neighbours. Timtim and Borbor were released by Indonesia’s agriculture ministry as national superior varieties under decrees dated December 2010, and are now known as Gayo 1 and Gayo 2. Ateng Super followed later, released under a ministry decree dated December 2022 and handed over publicly in early 2023 as Gayo 3. Three of the four best-known Gayo working cultivars have therefore been through a formal release process that generates published characterisation. P88 has not. It stayed what it had been: a name on nursery lists and in conversation, planted at scale, never formally released.

A name that travels faster than its documentation
P88 did not spread through a certified supply chain, and understanding why means looking at how seedlings actually move in Gayo. This is an overwhelmingly smallholder landscape spread across several districts, and almost none of it is estate-managed. Planting material moves through government assistance programmes, cooperative distributions, small local nurseries and, most of all, farmer-to-farmer exchange of seed and seedlings.
Indonesian researchers have started to map what that leaves behind. Work on the genetic diversity of Gayo arabica, combining agro-morphological scoring with SSR microsatellite markers across dozens of accessions, has been described by its own authors as among the first published characterisation of the material despite something close to two centuries of cultivation in the region — and it was undertaken partly out of concern about narrowing genetic variability in what is planted. That is a striking gap for one of the most commercially visible arabica landscapes in Southeast Asia.
That gap is the whole story of P88 in one sentence. The name has excellent distribution. The definition behind it does not. A seedling sold as P88 in one nursery and a seedling sold as P88 two valleys away share a label and no shared paperwork; whether they share genetics is an open question nobody appears to have published an answer to. Coffee is full of variety names that function as trade categories rather than genetic identities, and in Aceh, P88 is one of them.
This is not an accusation of bad faith. Informal seed systems are how most of the world’s coffee gets replanted, and they are fast and locally responsive in ways certified nursery chains are not. What they give up is traceability — and that falls hardest on exactly the claim a specialty buyer most wants to make: that this lot is this variety.
The pedigree, source by source
Here is what the public record actually contains, laid out rather than harmonised. Note that no two accounts agree, and that the most detailed one hedges itself.

What survives cross-checking is modest: the name entered Aceh from outside, most reports route it through Thailand at the end of the 1980s, and the material is generally understood to be Catimor-type. Everything upstream of that — a breeding institution, a numbered cross, a release year, a describing programme — is either absent or asserted without a citation. We have not found a primary source that settles it, and the honest position is that one may not exist in the public record at all.
If P88 is Catimor-derived, it carries Timor Hybrid ancestry and the rust-resistance genetics that come with it, along with the trade-offs that family is known for. That whole lineage is covered in our guide to the Catimor coffee variety, and there is no need to retell it here — but hold on to the conditional. “Catimor-derived” is the consensus reading of P88, not a verified fact about it.
How P88 behaves in Gayo conditions
Field description is firmer ground than pedigree, though even here P88 is rarely singled out. It is described as a compact, densely branched plant with the short, harvestable architecture that made Catimor-type selections attractive to smallholders in the first place. Growers describe it as they describe most of this family: vigorous, quick into production, and forgiving under the kind of management a household can actually deliver alongside everything else.
Two qualifications matter. The first is elevation. Gayo plantings are commonly given as running from around 1,000 m to roughly 1,700 m, and the same material behaves very differently across that band — the better cup reports for P88 come consistently from the upper end, as they do for most of the region’s cultivars. The second is stability. Almost all of this material is grown from seed rather than clonally propagated, so what a nursery sells as P88 has been segregating for generations. Genuinely uniform P88 plantings are the exception, not the rule.
On disease, the honest formulation is a tolerance claim rather than a resistance claim. P88 is reported to hold up well against coffee leaf rust, and that reported tolerance is a large part of why it spread through Aceh. It is not immune. Resistance carried by Catimor-line material has broken down in a number of producing countries as rust populations shifted, and rust pressure in general rises with warmth and humidity, which in practice means lower plantings carry more of it. Why Catimor-line material took over the Gayo highlands
The reason is not mysterious. The varieties Gayo smallholders planted from the late 1980s onward — P88 among them — went in largely to replace older selections that had been hurt by disease. That is a replanting decision made under pressure, on land that was already somebody’s income, and it selects hard for survival.
In that situation the criteria are survival, speed to first crop, and yield under imperfect management. Cup quality counts, but it is not first, and a household replanting a damaged block will not gamble several years of income on a susceptible tall plant because a distant buyer prefers the flavour. P88 fits that pattern rather than breaking it. Where it differs from Sigararutang is instructive. Sigararutang has a formal Indonesian release, an origin narrative with a place attached, and a name that explains itself. P88 has a number, a rumour of a route, and enormous uptake.
What it tastes like, honestly
The defensible statement is that P88 cups well in Gayo when it is grown high and handled carefully, and that nobody appears to have isolated a P88 flavour signature from everything else going on around it.
Indonesian sensory work does exist, and P88 turns up in it: comparative studies of Gayo arabica have used Timtim, Borbor, P88 and other local material as their test set. But look at what those studies are usually built to test — processing method, drying, brewing method — with variety as one axis among several. The differences they report are not cleanly attributable to the plant, and none of the results in general circulation amounts to a published quality ranking of P88 against its neighbours.
There is a second confound, and in Sumatra it is the dominant one. The region’s characteristic processing method — wet-hulling, giling basah — removes the parchment at high moisture and imposes a heavy, low-acid, earthy signature that flattens exactly the aromatic differences a variety name is supposed to signal. Two cultivars wet-hulled the same way in the same village will taste more like each other than either tastes like itself washed. No cup scores, then, and no invented descriptors. P88 is clean and balanced in good hands at good elevation, and unremarkable otherwise — which describes most of the world’s arabica.

Set against the other well-known Gayo cultivars, P88 occupies a genuinely odd position: as widely planted as the released lines, and far less written up than any of them.

The contrast that matters is in the third row. Gayo 1, Gayo 2 and Gayo 3 each went through a process that produced documentation. P88 did not, and the gap has never been filled. It is not that P88 performed badly — it is that it was never formally written up, and the name kept spreading anyway.
What a bag labelled P88 actually tells you
Something real, but not what most people assume.
It tells you the lot comes from Aceh, almost certainly the Gayo highlands, from a smallholder or from a cooperative pooling smallholders. It tells you the planting material came out of the informal or programme-driven seed system rather than a certified nursery chain, and that the grower prioritised a vigorous, disease-tolerant, harvestable plant over a fashionable one. All of that is genuine information about how a coffee was produced, and it is worth having.
It does not tell you a verified genetic identity, because none is published. It does not tell you the seedlings in that plot match seedlings sold under the same name elsewhere in Aceh. And it does not predict the cup, because elevation, picking discipline and above all the wet-hulling decision move the flavour further than the cultivar does. A variety name on a bag is not a quality grade — and where the name has no published definition behind it, it is not even a reliable identity claim.
Bottom line
P88 is a genuine fixture of coffee farming in Aceh: widely planted, valued for vigour and reported rust tolerance, and part of the wave of Catimor-type material that spread through the Gayo highlands from the late 1980s. It is also a name whose documentation never caught up with its distribution. Its pedigree is given several incompatible ways by different sources, all three of its best-known neighbours have been through a national release process while it has not, and the seed behind it moves through channels that keep no records. Report it as what it is — a working smallholder line with a contested pedigree — and judge the coffee on the lot, the elevation and the processing, which is where the differences you can actually taste get made.
