Yes — Norfolk Island coffee is a real, commercial crop. On a small subtropical island in the South Pacific, an Australian external territory of roughly 35 square kilometres, coffee is grown, pulped, dried, roasted and poured within a few kilometres of the trees that produced it. The planting is minute by any world standard. What makes it interesting is not that the island grows coffee, but that almost none of the coffee ever leaves.

What every source agrees on is the physical claim — trees, a mill, a roaster and a counter, all within a short walk of each other.

Coffee on the island is older than that business, though not as an industry. Island heritage writing records that coffee trees once grew in the valleys and around houses, valued for white flowers and bright red berries and for strong straight wood that was cut into handles for garden hoes and adzes. The same accounts describe the household process: pick the ripe berries and remove the outer skin, soak the beans for three days, drain and soak them again for another three, then dry them on hessian in the sun. The crop is therefore grown, processed, roasted and served to the drinker inside a radius of a few kilometres. The product being sold is not really a bag of beans at all; it is an encounter — the planting, the roastery, the cup drunk on the island, and the packet carried home in hand luggage by someone who saw where it came from. The customer travels to the origin, so the coffee never has to travel from it.

That is not quite an absolute, and the exception is worth stating. A business-to-business trade listing has advertised locally grown Norfolk Island arabica for export worldwide, so the ambition has at least been put in public. Nothing is lost in transfer, no lot is blended into anonymity at a regional dry mill, and the roaster knows what happened to every batch of cherry because the roaster was standing in the row when it was picked. Feedback is almost immediate: a fermentation that ran too long, or a drying batch caught by rain, shows up in a cup served days later to a customer who is physically present. Most origins wait months for that signal, filtered through an importer's notes, if it reaches them at all.

It also concentrates every risk in one place. There is no second grower to cover a bad year, no cooperative mill to fall back on if a pulper breaks, and no local pool of expertise, because the local industry is the operation itself. Spare parts come in across the freight system described above, so a mechanical failure at the wrong point in the season is not a phone call but a voyage. Skills live in individual heads rather than in an institution, which makes succession the largest threat to an industry this size — more than weather, more than disease.
