Sooty mould on coffee is the black, soot-like film that spreads over leaves, stems and cherries when a coffee tree is infested by sap-sucking insects. The fungi behind it — chiefly Capnodium species and allied genera — are saprophytes: they do not penetrate or feed on plant tissue. Instead they colonise the sugary honeydew that scales, mealybugs and aphids excrete. Sooty mould is therefore a symptom, not a primary pathogen, and lasting control means removing the insects, not the mould.

What sooty mould actually is

Sooty mould is a loose name for a group of dark fungi that grow superficially on the surfaces of leaves and fruit. The most commonly named genus is Capnodium, but Cladosporium, Aureobasidium, Scorias and other dematiaceous (dark-walled) fungi are frequently involved. Their mycelium is heavily pigmented with melanin, which is why the coating looks like a dusting of chimney soot.

Crucially, these fungi are saprophytic. They obtain their nutrients from the film of sugary liquid deposited on plant surfaces, not from living cells. A sooty-mould fungus has no specialised structures to invade coffee tissue, extract sap, or trigger disease inside the plant. Wipe or wash away the sticky layer it grows on and the mould has nothing left to eat.

This distinguishes it sharply from a true pathogen such as coffee leaf rust, which colonises and destroys living leaf tissue from the inside. Sooty mould never does that — its damage is entirely external and indirect.

The honeydew connection

The whole story starts with sap-sucking insects. Species that feed on coffee phloem take in far more sugary sap than they can use, and they void the excess as a clear, sticky secretion called honeydew. The insects most often responsible on coffee include:

Wherever these insects build up, sooty mould follows. The density of the black film is a rough visual gauge of how heavy the underlying insect population has become.

The ant mutualism

Sooty mould rarely appears in isolation. Many honeydew-producing insects live in a mutualistic partnership with ants. The ants harvest honeydew as a food source, and in return they actively protect the insects — carrying them to fresh feeding sites, and driving off or killing the ladybirds, lacewings and parasitic wasps that would otherwise keep the pest population in check.

This ant tending has two consequences for the coffee grower. First, it lets scale and mealybug colonies swell far larger than they would unattended, which means more honeydew and thicker sooty mould. Second, it means that any control programme has to consider the ants as well as the insects: if ants keep defending the colony and moving it around, the sap-sucking population — and therefore the mould — will keep coming back.

How sooty mould harms the coffee tree

Because the fungus never enters the plant, all of its damage is indirect:

  • Blocked photosynthesis. The opaque black film physically shades the leaf surface. Light that should reach the chloroplasts is intercepted by the mould instead, so the leaf fixes less carbon. Heavy, persistent coatings measurably reduce a tree's vigour and can slow growth and cherry filling.
  • Reduced gas exchange. A thick crust can partially obstruct stomata and trap heat on the leaf, adding mild stress on top of the light loss.
  • Unsightly cherries. Mould-coated berries look dirty and can be downgraded cosmetically, even though the fungus itself does not rot the fruit.
  • A visible warning sign. The mould's real value to a grower is diagnostic. A spreading black film is a reliable flag that a sap-sucking infestation — and possibly an ant partnership — is underway and needs attention.

Set against a disease that actually kills tissue, sooty mould is a comparatively mild problem. But in shaded, humid or poorly ventilated plantings where scale and mealybug thrive, it can become chronic and drag down the productivity of affected trees.

How to tell sooty mould from other leaf blackening

Growers sometimes confuse sooty mould with genuine leaf diseases or nutrient disorders, and the distinction matters because the treatments are completely different. Two features give sooty mould away. First, it sits on top of the surface as a dry, superficial layer that can be rubbed or flaked off with a fingernail, leaving healthy green tissue underneath; a true fungal lesion is embedded within the leaf and cannot be wiped away. Second, sooty mould almost always accompanies visible sap-sucking insects or their sticky honeydew, and it concentrates on the upper surfaces of lower leaves sitting directly beneath a feeding colony. Why control targets the insect, not the mould

The single most important principle is that spraying a fungicide at sooty mould is the wrong instinct. The fungus is only a passenger on the honeydew. Kill the mould and leave the insects, and a fresh layer of honeydew will simply support a new colony of fungus within weeks. The durable fix is to break the chain at its source — the sap-sucking insect (and the ants that shelter it).

Manage the vector insects

Reduce the scale, mealybug or aphid population and honeydew production stops, after which existing mould weathers off in rain and wind. Common approaches include:

  • Horticultural oil and insecticidal soap. Fine mineral or plant oils and soft-soap sprays smother soft scales, mealybug crawlers and aphids by coating them. Thorough coverage of leaf undersides and shoot crevices is essential. These low-residue options fit well with sustainable programmes.
  • Biological control. Ladybird beetles, lacewing larvae, predatory midges and parasitic wasps naturally suppress scale and aphid numbers — provided ants are not protecting the colony from them. Conserving these natural enemies is often the most sustainable long-term lever.
  • Pruning and thinning. Removing heavily infested shoots, opening the canopy and improving airflow lowers the humidity that both insects and mould favour, and physically removes established colonies.

Deal with the ants

Where ants are tending the insects, break the partnership. Sticky bands or barriers around the trunk stop ants climbing to the colony, which exposes the scales and mealybugs to their natural predators again. Removing the ants often causes the insect population — and the mould — to collapse on its own.

Wash off residual mould

Once honeydew production has stopped, the fungus can be hastened off with a plain water wash or a mild soap-and-water rinse of accessible foliage and cherries. This is cosmetic: it clears the light-blocking film and improves the look of the crop, but it treats the symptom, not the cause.
